The BSD Safety Gloves Against Electric Arc, Type A, are arc-rated protective gloves for electricians working in the vicinity of live installations. Rated ATPV 18.0 cal/cm² and IEC 61482-1-2 APC 2 (395 kJ), they suit switching, covering work and fuse removal. They have no insulating properties, so separate insulating gloves are required for live work.
BSD Safety Gloves Against Electric Arc, Type A, 18.0 cal/cm²
The BSD Type A is an arc-rated protective glove for electricians working in the vicinity of live electrical installations. It is particularly suited to switching operations, covering and masking work, inserting insulating protective plates, and removing NH fuses. The glove is tested to the box test method of IEC 61482-1-2 at Arc Protection Class 2 with a test level of 395 kJ, and carries an ATPV of 18.0 cal/cm² to ASTM F2675/F2675M-13. One point stated plainly on the manufacturer datasheet: these gloves have no insulating properties. For live working you still need separate insulating gloves in the correct class for the voltage.

Applications
- MV and LV switching operations where an arc flash risk has been identified by risk assessment
- Covering and masking work, and inserting insulating protective plates
- Removal and insertion of NH fuses
- Installations with higher short-circuit energy, where the 395 kJ test level applies under the site risk assessment
The soft, flexible leather gives good dexterity when handling fuse carriers or operating switchgear mechanisms. If you are matching gloves to an incident energy figure on your switchgear labels, our arc flash studies service can establish that figure, and the wider arc flash protection range covers suits, face protection and balaclavas to complete the PPE set.
FAQs
Do these gloves provide electrical insulation?
No. The manufacturer states clearly that the Type A glove has no insulating properties. It protects against the thermal hazard of an electric arc only. For live working, separate insulating gloves to EN 60903, in the correct class for the system voltage, must be used.
What does the 18.0 cal/cm² rating mean?
It is the ATPV, the incident energy level at which the glove material gives a 50 percent probability of a second-degree burn, measured by the open arc test to ASTM F2675. Match it against the incident energy calculated for your equipment, typically from an arc flash study, before specifying.
