BSD Comfort Arc Flash Jacket, Dungarees and Trousers, 22.0 cal/cm², Class 2

The BSD Comfort range of arc flash jackets, dungarees and trousers protects the wearer against the thermal effects of an electric arc during switching, testing and maintenance work on or near energised equipment. In double-layer form the garments achieve Class 2 to IEC 61482-1-2 (box test, arc energy 318 kJ) and an ATPV of 22 cal/cm² to IEC 61482-1-1 (ASTM F1959). Single-layer areas are rated Class 1 with an ATPV of 13 cal/cm². That is serious, tested protection for MV and LV switchroom work, and it sits comfortably within the PPE levels typically called for by an arc flash study on Irish industrial and utility sites.

Fabric and Construction

The fabric is an inherently flame-retardant blend of 55% modacrylic, 44% cotton and 1% antistatic fibre. Because the protection is built into the fibre rather than applied as a finish, it does not wash out, and the garments are optimised for industrial laundering to ISO 15797. Yarn dyeing means no leaching of the fabric colour. Wearers notice the practical things: low weight, good moisture regulation and high breathability (RET 4.0 m²·Pa/W to EN 31092 / ISO 11092), a sportive cut, and reflective strips and piping for visibility. The trousers include knee cushion bags, which anyone who has spent a morning kneeling in front of a switchgear lineup will appreciate.

FAQs

Is 22 cal/cm² enough for our switchroom?

That depends on the incident energy at each location, which is why we recommend an arc flash study before specifying PPE. A 22 cal/cm² ATPV covers many MV and LV switching tasks, but your study results should drive the final selection.

Can these garments be industrially laundered?

Yes. The fabric is optimised for industrial laundry to ISO 15797, and the flame-retardant effect is inherent to the modacrylic fibre, so repeated washing does not degrade the arc protection. Always follow the garment care label.
