The BSD Classic arc flash range, jacket, trousers, dungarees and switching coat, protects against the thermal hazards of an electric arc during switching operations and work on or near live parts. Tested to IEC 61482-1-1 with an ATPV of 37.7 cal/cm² and IEC 61482-1-2 Class 1 or Class 2 depending on garment layering.
BSD Classic Arc Flash Jacket, Trousers, Dungarees and Switching Coat, Class 1, 37.7 cal/cm²
The BSD Classic range is a set of arc-rated garments for personnel working at live parts or in the vicinity of live parts, for example during switching operations. According to the manufacturer datasheet, the high arc protection level against thermal hazards means the garments can be used at electrical installations with higher short-circuit energy, up to a WLBP of 395 kJ, subject to a risk assessment in line with German BGI/GUV-I 5188 guidance.
Arc Protection Ratings and Standards
The switching coat carries double layering on the front and sleeves, which lifts it to Class 2 under the box test; single layered garments achieve Class 1.
| Standard | Rating |
|---|---|
| IEC 61482-1-1 (open arc) | ATPV 37.7 cal/cm² |
| IEC 61482-1-2: 2007 (box test) | Class 2 (double layered), Class 1 (single layered), WLBP 395 kJ |
| EN ISO 11612: 2008 | Code A1+A2, B1, C1, F1 (double layered garments) |
| EN ISO 11611: 2007 | Code 1-A1+A2, ATPV 14.7 cal/cm² (single layered garments) |
| EN 1149-5: 2008 | Electrostatic properties, HRC 2 |
Fabric and Construction
- Fabric: 87% cotton, 12% high tenacity nylon, 1% carbon, approximately 345 g/m²
- Colour: navy/royal blue
- Switching coat length approximately 110 cm, weight approximately 1500 g
- Collar marking shows protection class, fabric composition, cleaning instructions and pictograms
- Certificate of Conformity under EU Directive 89/686/EWG
The range covers four garments: jacket (SKU 4621), trousers (SKU 4623), dungarees (SKU 4622) and switching coat (SKU 46110). Coat sizes run M to XXL.
Specifying the Right PPE
An ATPV of 37.7 cal/cm² puts this range at the heavier end of arc-rated workwear, suited to switching on installations where the risk assessment demands more than everyday arc-rated clothing. If you are unsure what incident energy your switchrooms present, an arc flash study will give you the figures to specify PPE against. FAQs
What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 in this range?
Under IEC 61482-1-2 box testing, double layered garments, such as the switching coat with its layered front and sleeves, achieve Class 2. Single layered garments achieve Class 1. The open arc rating for the range is an ATPV of 37.7 cal/cm² to IEC 61482-1-1.
Can these garments be used for live working?
Yes. The manufacturer states the coat permits work at live parts or in the vicinity of live parts, for example switching operations, at installations with higher short-circuit energy up to a WLBP of 395 kJ, subject to a site-specific risk assessment.
